Haggerty Jr. wins district judge seat
In the race for judge in District 14-1-02, Connellsville Police Sgt. Ronald Haggerty Jr. beat out five other candidates in yesterday's primary election.
With all candidates cross-filing on both the Democratic and Republican tickets, Haggerty received 33 percent of the Democrat vote and 35 percent of the Republican vote, followed by Gretchen Mundorff with 24 percent of the Democrat vote and 28 percent of the Republican vote. Albert "Rocky" Younkin received 20 percent of the Democrat vote and 16 percent of the Republican vote. James Bielecki received 12 percent of the Democrat vote and 10 percent of the Republican vote. Jeffrey Jake Jacobs received 7 percent of the Democrat vote and 6 percent of the Republican vote. John Shirley received 5 percent of the Democrat vote and 4 percent of the Republican vote.
"The race was long, but everything turned out well," Haggerty said.
Haggerty credits his victory by surrounding himself with good people in his campaign -- friends and supporters whom he thanked for their hard work.
"I guess with good people, you can't lose," Haggerty said.
While he's relieved that the long day of last-minute campaigning is over, he's happy and also overwhelmed with the turnout, especially with a race so very close in the early returns.
"It was bouncing back and forth," he said with the results between him and Mundorff; she was ahead in the beginning on the Republican ticket. "Then it just took off."
Along with being on the Connellsville Police Department, Haggerty is a supervisor for the Fayette County Drug Task Force, member of the Pennsylvania Narcotic Officers Association, member of the Fraternal Order of Police, and member of FBI National Academy of Western Pennsylvania.
With his time on the police force, Haggerty said he has participated in more than 1,000 criminal investigations and more than 1,000 traffic and non-traffic citations, and has attended hundreds of preliminary hearings in front of district judges.
He earned an associates degree in criminal justice with Westmoreland County Community College and earned additional college credits from the FBI National Academy.
Haggerty is a member of the Connellsville Elks, Slovak Club, is a Cub Scout leader, a volunteer with the Connellsville Little League Baseball, and is a member of St. Rita's Roman Catholic Church in Connellsville.
Fayette vote totals are unofficial until certified by the election bureau.
